Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The practice of Ballroom Dance (BD) meets the desires of human beings to practice regular physical activity, increase self-esteem, improve cosmetic appearance and develop skills such as coordination, laterality and rhythm. However, no previous studies assessing postural changes generated by it were found. OBJECTIVE: To study the postural effects that the BD promotes in students of a dance school in the city of Bento Gonçalves-RS, over the first three months of practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the static posture in the sagital plane of 18 individuals who had never come into contact with this type of dance, divided into 2 groups (control and experimental) and evaluated by photographic, both pre and post-experiment. The experiment consisted of one weekly class of BD, lasting 75 minutes each, over 3 months. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results of the postural assessment showed that the practice of BD affected only in the posture of the cervical spine, causing the individual practitioners to provide additional rectified after the first three months of lessons. Regarding other aspects evaluated postural significant changes were not found after comparing the results before and after the experiment, suggesting that three months practice of BD were not sufficient to promote changes in the static posture of individuals.
