Resumen

The objective of this study was to investigate the association of body mass index (BMI) with risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MS) in boys adolescents from the city of Curitiba-Brazil. The sample consisted of 79 boys aged 10 to 18 years old in the public schools of the city of Curitiba-Brazil. Was measured weight, height and BMI was calculated after blood collection were measured values of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TRI), HDL, glucose (GL) and LDL was calculated, then the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) was measured. Statistical analysis consisted of mean and standard deviation, followed by a Pearson correlation with a significance level of p<0.05. The results were that BMI is positive associated with p<0.05 with SBP, DBP GL, LDL and TRI and negatively p<0.05 with HDL. Thus we conclude that BMI is a strong indicator of cardiometabolic disorder and should be used to check the health of adolescents.
