Resumen

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: Analyse the association between the physical activity level envolving parents and their children with two different cut-off scores in public schools in an urban center in the South region of Brazil. METHODS: A transverse study was made. Its target population is formed by public school adolescents on the 3rd year of high school, and their parents. The data were collected using a self applied questionnaire. The practice of physical activities was measured using two different cut-off scores. The first to be used was the International Physical Activity Questionnaires – IPAQ observing the levels: very active, active, irregularly active A, irregularly active B and sedentary. And the second cut-off score used was in minutes, being classified as sedentary the adult who performed less than 150 minutes of physical activities during the week and the adolescent who performed less than 300 minutes during the week. As statistical analysis, the description of the adolescents data was made, parents through simple and crusade frequency tables. Fisher's exact test and Chi square test were applied with a 5% level of significance to verify the significative associations between the variables related to the adolescents and their parents. RESULTS: 293 adolescents and their respective parents answered the questionnaire. We can realize, analyzing the practice of physical activities, that there is a significant association between the adolescents and their parents. The results show that parents who are physically active have children who are physically active, and sedentary children have sedentary parents. Even using the IPAQ with two different cut-off scores in level or minutes. CONCLUSION: The practice of physical activities is associated between parents and children even if we use two different cut-off scores and also to the type of physical activity performed at leisure. Keywords: sedentarism, physical activities at leisure, non-communicable chronic diseases.
