Abstract

Among the planning mechanisms available to the Government that could be used in territorial planning is the ecological-economic zoning - EEZ, which seeks for reconcilement between economic development and environmental quality. The aim of this study is to determine areas for the introduction and development of organic foods cultivation in the municipality of Arroio do Meio/RS/BR. The study has developed two proposals in order to recognize the territorial and environmental characteristics of the municipality and the vocation of different areas regarding anthropogenic occupation and environmental conservation: 1) EEZ indicating the uses and actions recommended for the rational use of the territory, 2) decision support routines for the determination of aptitude. The results of both evaluations pointed out that the city has approximately 40% of the framed area as a zone of intensive use, showing ability to promote organic foods production.
