This paper outlines the development of (1) a chemical system comprising the addition of a monoprotic weak acid (hypochlorous acid, HOCl) to water and (2) a thermodynamic model that predicts, in a systematic way, the reactions for chlorine disinfection. Species of the HOCl + H2O system as well as pCT are represented pictorially in the pH x pH diagram which allows the determination of the influence of hypochlorous acid in the disinfection reaction and to obtain the free residual fraction of the chlorine compound. In the thermodynamic model applied to H2O +Cl2 (g) + HOCl + OCl system, redox reactions allowed to determine pε and pH parameters. These reactions are analyzed at 25°C and the results are only valid for this temperature.Downloads
