Environmental Services (PES) programs and projects have proven to be an effective methodology in Brazil and other countries for the conservation and restoration of ecosystems, with different approaches, but especially in the recovery of degraded areas and the improvement of water quality and quantity in watersheds. The Water Protector Program implemented in the municipality of Vera Cruz is an example of a local PES program located in the center of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the Pardo basin, focusing its efforts and resources on the conservation and restoration of riparian areas of the Arroio Andréas sub-basin since 2011. Using QGIS, Google Earth, and data generated by the MapBiomas platform, the area was analyzed between the years 2011 and 2021, covering a 10-year period of program execution. The period under study highlights the increase in forest cover, by 2,165 hectares during this period, an aspect that may be associated with the actions of the Water Protector Program. This demonstrates how effective land use and occupation practices can protect water resources and promote environmental sustainability through legislation, public awareness, economic incentives, and cooperation among sectors. The Water Protector Program provides an inspiring model for other regions interested in preserving their natural resources. Good land use and occupation practices are essential for environmental preservation and sustainability.
