Abstract

Sexual ang gender minorities suffer from stigma and prejudice. Women who do not fit the normative standards of society experience high levels of stress and may have more damage to their mental health. The contribution of a support network can be fundamental in facing these experiences. This study sought to assess whether there are relationships between social support, minority stress and indicators of anxiety and depression in Brazilian lesbian and bisexual women. This is a quantitative, correlational and cross-sectional study. Fifty-three cisgender women, Brazilians and residents of Brazil, aged between 18 and 50 years old participated in this research. Participants answered the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Social Support Scale, Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Minority Stress Assessment Protocol – Female Version, and the Anxiety, Depression, and Stress Scale. The results indicated that there is a correlation between the indicators of social support and the indicator of disclosure of sexuality in the Minority Stress Assessment protocol. Taking into account the findings, strengthening the support network can enable the disclosure of sexual identity in a less violent, spontaneous and welcoming way, serving as support to face situations of prejudice.
