PRISON EDUCATION IN THE POINT OF VIEW OF TEACHERS: A GAP BETWEEN THE EXPECTATION AND THE ACHIEVEMENT

Abstract: This paper highlights, through the teacher’s voices, that although prison is pointed out to be a space of reeducation and ressocialization of men in situation of lack of freedom , it is built upon an experience of authoritarian practice of power and domination that results in being an organization whose relations are socialized in delinquency. Between the official speech and the way of life implemented by ressocialization, typical of prison, there is a gap: although a humanized treatment is pursued, including the education, the adopted techniques reveal another hidden side. Teachers involved in this research, a case study developed in a male prison in the interior of São Paulo State/ Brazil, have made very clear that the aim of rehabilitation has remained in their speech, very evident by their talks, which states that the fundamental efficiency element of their role reside in the process of freedom rescuing, and in the role of school as one of the institutions that best accomplishes the task of offering possibilities that set the convicts free while uniting them at the same time. However the depicted backgrounds are not promisingly comfortable, due to a lack of penitentiary organizations policy transparency and the gap between the official discourse and the way of life established in the prison space, difficult to be improved, some steps may be taken, as many of the existing problems in the schools inside prison unities are similar to those in other school premises.
