Emotional eating of people with metabolic diseases at a university hospital in Rio Grande do Sul

Introduction: this article focuses on situations in which food is used as a response to some emotional dysregulation by people with metabolic diseases. Objective: to identify the presence of emotional eating in users of the endocrinology medical outpatient clinic and the multidisciplinary chronic diseases outpatient clinic of the multidisciplinary residency, of a university hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul Method: cross-sectional and descriptive study, carried out with users who presented some metabolic alteration, monitored in an endocrinology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in the central region of RS. To collect data, a form with socioeconomic and self-care questions was used. In addition to these, the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ) was used to identify emotional eating. Descriptive statistical analyzes were performed. Results: 50 users participated, with a predominance of female sex assigned at birth (80%), living in the city where the research was carried out (42%), aged between 31 and 59 years old. There was a higher percentage of users who underwent some type of psychological support (52%) and who were diagnosed with pre-diabetes (56%). Regarding emotional eating, the classification as emotional eaters predominated (34%), followed by low emotional eaters (26%), very emotional eaters (22%) and non-emotional eaters (18%). Conclusions: it was identified that patients with metabolic changes fall into some level of emotional eaters. Using food as a strategy to alleviate emotional pain can, over time, harm your health condition.
