Abstract

Objective: To identify possible relationships between marital status and physical activity among Brazilian adults. Method: In November, 2021, a systematic review was carried out in nine electronic databases (Academic Search Premier, Embase, Lilacs, Pubmed, Psycinfo, Scielo, Scopus, Sportdiscus and Web of Science), Google Scholar and reference lists, establishing the criteria of original studies conducted in Brazil, involving samples of men and women over 18 years of age, without specific clinical conditions and impediments to the practice of physical activity. The studies of interest should contain analyses with at least three strata of marital status (e.g., single, married/with a partner and separated/divorced), with no objections regarding the domains, types, instruments and cut-off points for physical activity. Results: After analysing the initial 12,978 studies, the descriptive synthesis comprised 21 articles, representing 17 studies. When the multivariate analyses of the articles were considered, with genders aggregated, three studies reported lower levels of leisure-time physical activity among "married/partnered" people when compared to single people. Conclusion: Special attention needs to be paid to recognising the barriers to physical activity among these populations, as well as their proper understanding in public policies aimed at promoting physical activity.
