Composting of swine waste should be considered as an alternative. This study was conducted in field conditions in 16 commercial swine farms, integrated to Perdigão Agroindustrial S/A, Rio Grande do Sul Regional, at the Finishing Vertical System (SVT). In the integration the producers raise the pigs from weaning to finishing. A completely randomized design was used. The following treatments were studied: Treatment 1 (substrate: sawdust), Treatment 2 (substrate: wood shavings), Treatment 3 (substrate: poultry litter) and Treatment 4 (conventional waste treatment: lagoons), with four replications. The treatments were randomly distributed to the experimental units (farms). The following variables were measured: temperature of the composting process, volume of waste produced, physiochemical analysis of composting and liquid waste. The collected data were submitted to statistical analysis, and the treatment means were compared by orthogonal contrasts. A treatment effect was found for volume and dry mater of waste. In conclusion, composting of swine waste changes the physical properties of the waste, reduces the volume and concentrates nutrients.Downloads
