Background and Objectives: The Brazilian psychiatric reform and the creation of Psychosocial Care Centers have provided great advances in the care of people in mental distress. The aim of the study was to explore epidemiological data on mental health in a municipality in the Alto Paranaíba region, state of Minas Gerais. Methods: This is an exploratory study in which were analyzed the medical records of primary health care in a small municipality. Data collection included 100% of medical records of patients diagnosed with mental disorders. Results: The largest number of visits were from women (60.39%), age range of 20-39 years (34.42%), diagnosed with anxiety disorders (38.96%) and depression (35.06%). The main drugs prescribed were antidepressants (63.64%) and benzodiazepines (83.77%). Most referrals (95%) were for psychiatry and a small part (5%) was for psychology. Conclusion: There is need for a mental health service in which people suffering from mental suffering are offered follow-up treatment with guarantee of multi-professional intervention, which will strengthen the actions of Primary Care and Family Health Units.Downloads
