Abstract

Background and Objectives: Due to the high mortality rates associated with fungal infections, methods for detection and diagnosis are important for an adequate and effective treatment of these microorganisms. The objective of the present study was to verify the incidence cellular of fungi on some of the surfaces of a surgical center. Methods: The data were collected with the aid of a sterile swab and soaked in peptone water and rubbed in 20 cm 2 quadrants of the following areas studied: medication table, operating table, marble countertops and air conditioning grills. The analyzes were performed in duplicate, using decimal dilutions from 10 -1 to 10 -6 . After incubation 25° C / 72h, quantitation of fungi was performed. The colonies were evaluated for color, size, edge and pigment production, and then distinguished between yeast and filamentous fungi. Results: The results point to a result of variability in the number of colony forming units (CFU) / cm 2 of fungi, both for the same points as in different sampling points in addition to data CFU / cm 2 <1. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the presence of fungi on some surgical room surfaces. It is concluded that it is necessary that professionals in the hospital area constantly go through training and continuing education for changes in habits.
