The article approaches the proposal of popular education organized by Paulo Freire in Brazil in the early 1960s, explaining its historicity and methodology. Initially we explain aspects of education in the twentieth century, with emphasis on the 1950s and early 1960s, indicating the emergence of popular education. Next, Paulo Freire's educational practice proposal and its conception of education are thought from the practices with which the educator was involved and from the historical and geographical reality in which he was inserted. Finally, through documentary analysis of the press, we present the tensions and disputes around education at the time, understood as struggles of representations.Downloads
