Abstract

The paper shows how is being established a relationship between development and learning of mathematics by the Brazilian media. The article presents a brief discussion of the concept of development, showing its linkage to the industrial sector since the middle of last century, but also showing the transformations of the rationality that drives this sector. In accordance with this framework, there is a change from reproduction industry to innovation industry, which increases the need for engineers. Based on these considerations 12 articles published on websites of Brazilian press vehicles between 2010 and 2012 are analyzed, which allows realizing a conception that the training of engineers, considered essential for the development at the current stage of capitalism, would be prior dependent on the performance of students in mathematics while the almost exclusive aim of learning math should be produce conditions for increasing the number of engineers in the country.
