In order to understand the policies for higher education it is necessary to understand, previously, the meaning and contradictions of the social and economic project in which they are instituted. With this in mind, the text has the following objectives: (i) to discuss the premises of liberal capitalist democracy; (ii) to present the process of redefinition of the State's role in Brazil and its impact on public education; and (iii) to discuss the ongoing public education marketing process, focusing on policies for higher education. It uses as methodological procedures the bibliographical research and documentary research. In particular, it analyzes the National Plan of Education (2014-2024). Finally, it considers that the targets for higher education are being disregarded and even made unfeasible by the austere measures of fiscal adjustment, promoted by the current federal government, which has contributed to intensify the process of marketing of education.Downloads
