Introduction: the measures of social isolation and restrictions of access to universities may have been predictors for the change in the lifestyle of students and triggered psychological, physical and social changes, as a result of the constant changes in daily life. Objective: to analyze the scientific production on the level of physical activity and factors associated with COVID-19 in university students. Method: this is a systematic literature review and bibliometric mapping, in international journals indexed in the PubMed database, using the descriptors: Physical activity AND College students AND COVID-19. Original scientific articles published between 2020 and 2022 were included, resulting in 226 initial articles, of which 18 studies were included in the synthesis. Results: there was a diversity of evidence about physical activity during social isolation, as well as research reported gaps and possible interventions in the university context in the face of the COVID-19 event. In all the studies analyzed, sedentary behavior and physical activity levels fluctuated when comparing scenarios before and during the pandemic. Conclusion: students who maintained or increased their physical activity levels were less likely to develop symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Further comprehensive longitudinal research is suggested to further these conclusions. In addition, it is critical for higher education institutions to promote health education, provide adequate infrastructure, and support tailored programs to encourage regular exercise, aiming at the well-being of students during and after future pandemic periods.
