Call for papers - Artificial Intelligence and Cognition Interfaces

2024-01-08

The recent dissemination and massive growth of AI has been partially possible thanks to the availability of enormous amounts of data, often known as big data, triggering an emerging questioning of the relationship between AI and education. This emergency raises the need to consider multiple issues when investigating the objectives of this connection and what it involves, requiring careful observation on how and where AI is used, by whom and how it is managed.

AI is changing the classroom and the relationship with knowledge and inviting a vigilant attitude to the principle that education should always drive technology – and not the other way around, opening space for complex dimensions and interpretative impacts.

1.The impact on cognition: cognitive constructs such as attention are influenced by environmental stimuli, which may or may not improve human skills. Numerous questions arise about the impact of AI on the cognition of those in the educational process. How are cognition and its processes, so important for the learning process, affected by artificial intelligence?

  1. The impact on teachers: are teachers optimistic about AI or not and need to be more supported in developing digital skills?
  2. The impact on learning: students are already using AI – how can we harness the benefits, teach the right skills, and protect ourselves against the dangers of misinformation?
  3. Digital divide/AI: many do not have access to the Internet and AI. Can new technologies help to correct existing gaps?
  4. Impact on educational organizations: new forms of cognition and knowledge handling already require new skills. How are educational institutions reacting and preparing themselves in the face of the new paradigm?

AI is already an inevitable part of learning, life, and future work for today’s students. Education's mission is to support them so they can use it ethically, efficiently, and safely, while ensuring they benefit from an education that teaches the right skills and is rooted in quality resources and information.

In this dossier we intend to reflect on the countless possibilities that the topic of cognition and artificial intelligence allows. For this reason, texts that address the topic from an interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary perspective are welcome. Likewise, theoretical, and empirical articles and systematic reviews that relate to this proposal will be accepted.
