Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the painting As Mulatas by Di Cavalcanti, destroyed during the violent protests in January, and the photo that circulated in newspapers, showing representatives of the people climbing the ramp of the Planalto on President Lula’s inauguration day. Through discourse analysis, we ask how such images can be considered allegories of a state. What is at stake when we think about the Rule of Law and Democracy? Which bodies fit in a State/Nation?
