This paper analyses Hugo's representation of the cathedral of Notre Dame in his novel Notre Dame de Paris from the viewpoint of monstrosity (Cohen, 2000; Gil, 2000). The theoretical framework is provided by intermediality theories, specially by Elleström's work on media relations (2107; 2021) and Vieira's work on ekphrasis (Vieira, 2017). Considering the novel as Gothic literature (REIS, 2019), the paper aims at identifying how monstrosity constitutes a defining aspect of the ecphrastic representation of the cathedral, an architectural medium, in the narrative of the literary text.
