The transmediation of Cyrano nose’s tirade: from Cyrano de Bergerac to Cyrano mon amour

The article examines how the “nose tirade” monologue from Cyrano de Bergerac (1895) was transmediated into the film Cyrano, My Love (2018). Using the concept of transmediation (ELLESTRÖM, 2017, 2021), the study explores the adaptation of a theater piece conveyed exclusively in verbal language into a version grounded in different modal techniques. The reinterpretation of the “nose tirade” monologue in a multimodal production encourages the viewer to seek meaning through spatiotemporal relocation. For the analysis, the hypothesis is that in the transmediation process, the “nose tirade” scene was reinterpreted and updated to fulfill the film’s objectives. The theoretical foundation of the article is based on intermediality, particularly the work of researcher Lars Elleström (2017, 2021).
