In this paper, some of the key issues involved in the the relationship between anticipatory mechanisms and language processing are discussed. By reviewing studies from the last two decades, we present evidence that linguistic processing is sometimes guided by anticipation mechanisms and, therefore, a solely integrative model cannot account for the presented data. Although we do not discuss how central these anticipatory processes are for language comprehension, we argue that the study of an event-related potential - a late frontal positivity - can be helpful in answering questions such as how, when and what we predict during language processing.Downloads
