Abstract

The preservation of cultural manifestations relevant to popular culture represents an important strategy for preserving social cohesion of a community. This action is strategic for the implementation of initiatives related to sustainable development adequate to promote quality of life and historical memory relevant to the consolidation of social cohesion. This paper results from research that discusses the correlation between popular culture, social capital and sustainable development, discussing the preservation of popular manifestations in the context of urbanization in Brazil. São Luiz do Paraitinga was chosen for the research because this city has a great number of popular culture manifestations. The research has exploratory and descriptive historical approach to evaluate the relationship between popular culture, social capital and sustainable development in relation to the intense urbanization in Brazil. It appears that preservation of these manifestations of popular culture, features from the city chosen as object of this research, are related to the existence and accumulation of social capital among residents, aspect that promotes local development.
