Abstract

This article aims to analyze the socio-spatial dynamics after the formation of the Itaipu Lake, in October 1982, with the consequent immersion of the Seven Falls (saltos das Sete Quedas). From the social and environmental impact due to the flooding, a new stage of development is going to be implemented in Guaíra, since the natural attraction of the Seven Falls, for tourism, boosted the local economy. Through the master plans of 1980 and 1992, new guidelines for the development of the municipality were set, ordering a new socio-spatial reality. Data provided by public institutions also help methodologically the research. The present conditions point to a socioeconomic dynamic much more powerful than in the past, since the evidences of a new stage of development are represented in infrastructure works. As example we can mention the bridge over the Paraná River which is a new economic source, increase of employment, and integration of the municipality of Guaíra with other municipalities through inductive programs of regionalization.
