Abstract

The Ecological ICMS was established in Parana State in 1991 to Compensate Compensate municipalities that have protected areas within their territories for the resulting loss of revenue. The east coast of Parana State, composed by seven municipal districts, has 82.48% of its territory within of 31 protected areas. It deserve eminence the municipal districts of Guaraqueçaba and Guaratuba with, respectively, 98.76% and 98.47% of their area composed by protected areas. The present paper shows the preliminary results of a research that is being developed on the coast of Parana State with the goal to assess the evolution of the protected areas, to quantify the amount of Ecological ICMS revenue received by the Municipalities, as well as to compare the revenues from Federal and State level. It is concluded that Ecological ICMS revenues are highly significant for the municipalities with a rural profile, especially Guaraqueçaba, Antonina and Morretes.
