Abstract

The Farroupilha Revolution (1835-1845) is the episode occurred in the State of Rio Grande do Sul which most has been written and discussed about. One of the polemic and controversial topics of that movement is the positioning of liberal farroupilhas regarding to slavery. The article discusses the relation between liberalism and slavery and supports that the revolutionary farrapos defended a project of an effectively liberal and slave society in which access to civil and political rights were limited.
