The objective of this paper is to understand the socio-political background of the thinking about territorial development, taking into consideration the different conceptions of development. The intention is also to analyze the fundamentals and the contradictions, historical and current, subjacent to the consideration of the territory as an active element of development. To undertake this, the French case has been taken as empirical reference for being considered pioneer regarding this subject.Downloads
