Abstract

The sustainability indicators provide elements that facilitate the assessment of progress in the regions and also the fulfillment of the objectives / goals to produce human well-being both in line with a sustainable ecosystem. Thus, this paper analyzes the Sustainable Regional Development of the Southern region of Brazil, from the preparation of Sustainable Development Indicator (IDRS), which in addition to economic and social variables incorporates environmental variables. In 2010, there were 99.2% of the municipalities in transition and 0.67% in laggard stage. Thus, it is concluded that only 0:08% of the municipalities studied were classified as advanced stage in both years analyzed. The IDRS of southern Brazil was a result of the performance of the variable formal employment sector electricity consumption, residential energy consumption, expenditure on health, education, sports, leisure, welfare and assistance, properties and areas of natural and artificial forests, green area per inhabitant and risk of housing. The result of IDRS in southern Brazil showed that in 2000 there were 95.5% of the municipalities in transition and 4.45% in laggard stage. Thus, these data represent an optimized tool for the design of public policies and actions for sustainable development in regional, state and municipal.
