Abstract

The objective of this paper was to analyze the quantitative situation of water resources across the Pardo River Basin (Brazil) in future scenarios through a comparison between spatial and temporal water requirements and availabilities. Different future scenarios were established based on predicted changes in rice cultivation systems in that area. Water balances indicated greater water deficits in future scenarios compared with the current situation, even if strategies for reducing water use are applied. The results also showed that the expansion of rice plantation will be the main driving force behind water deficits in the future, and the increase of water supply through structural systems (such as reservoirs) will be crucial for the sustainability of water resources in the region if the ongoing tendency of rice production is maintained.
