Abstract

Large scale examinations, such as Brazil Examination, have unveiled Brazilian students’ poor performance regarding reading competency. Brazil Examination is a measuring tool applied to children and youngsters registered in 4 th and 8th grades (5th and 9th years) of primary school, in 2005 and 2007, with a new edition planned for 2009. What do teachers think about such examinations? This issue is focused in the final paper project for Master’s Degree whose title is: ‘Reading conceptions inherent to Brazil Examination contrasted with those of primary school teachers.’ This study will present the result of interviews carried out with teachers teaching students in the grades Brazil Examination is applied. Data indicates that most teachers are unaware of the competencies and abilities assessed by these tests.
