About the Journal

Focus and Scope

REDES is an academic journal, which has been published since 1996, it is vinculated to the Post Graduation Program (Master's and Doctoral Degree) in Regional Development - PPGDR / UNISC, and its Regional Development Research Center - CEPEDER.

Redes accepts theoretical and empirical nature articles that approach the processes of regional development through reflections and analysis about its different aspects and dimensions, such as the understanding of territorial dynamics, considering the different scales of action and analysis of socio-spatial processes, the historical-cultural diversity of the territory, the strategies and instruments of territorial planning and management, in the different dimensions of sustainability involved; the study of institutional capacities at its various levels, to take initiative, mediate and regulate territorial management processes; the analysis of conflicts, tensions and the production of consensuses between public power and social agents; and analysis of regional productive activity with emphasis on agents and social and economic organizations, forms of cooperation and conflicts, configured in different modes of organization of production and the market, among others.

Peer Review Process

REDES adopts the peer review mechanisms, characterizing itself as an academic publication.
The articles received are first reviewed by the editorial committee and, if they respect the standards for publication and are aligned with the themes of interest, they follow to a double-blind review process in which the identity of both the reviewer and the author are hidden from both parties.
The review system has been composed of two external reviewers that are chosen according to the theme and the article's focus for blind evaluations.

The result of the evaluation of the referees can be presented in four ways:
(1) Accepted article;
(2) Revisions required;
(3) Resubmit for review;
(4) Declined article.

If there are divergent opinions, the articles will be sent to a third partner.

REDES counts on a database of referees organized by themes related to regional development, and its recruitment follows the editorial policy that combines invitations to researchers from Brazil and abroad.

Publication Frequency

REDES has a quarterly periodicity.

Open Access Policy

The journal Redes offers prompt and free access to its content, following the belief of providing free scientific knowledge to the public is to provide greater global democratization of knowledge.

Submissions are made through the journal's webpage, with no article processing fees for the author.

Evaluation guidelines

The submitted papers evaluation undergoes two moments:
At first, the editors select the papers which will be forwarded to peer review, considering that:

a) The paper is in consonance with the editorial line of research and the journal standards;
b) Papers from undergraduate courses, lato sensu graduate programs or a master's degree will not be accepted for publication;
c) The first author must have a Doctorate degree;
d) The paper should have a maximum of three authors (preferable);

Respecting the described requirements of this first analysis held by the editorial board, the papers are forwarded to be evaluated by external reviewers, assuming that: (a) the paper has not been published nor been submitted to another journal, (b) manuscripts with similar content should not have been published or be under consideration by any other journal, (c) all persons listed as authors have approved the submission for publication in REDES journal; (d) any person mentioned in the paper as source of personal communication must have previously approved the quote through a written document.
The submitted papers then are sent to two reviewers, experts on the subject, for a careful evaluation considering its consistency and scientific quality. In case of divergence of opinion, the paper is sent to a third expert reviewer. The evaluation is double-blind, in which the identities of both the reviewer and the author are hidden from both parties.
The following criteria are considered by the reviewers:
-Relevance for the production of knowledge on Regional Development;
-originality and contribution;
-consistency in the text structure, the line of thought, and the articulation along the different parts of the text;
-clarity in writing;
-consistency in theory;
-the Regional Development approach in the paper;
-topicality and relevance of the references.

The papers recommended for publication with content review, are sent to two reviewers again after the author’s adjustments, preferably the same reviewers who participated in the previous evaluation process.
The Editorial Team and the Organizers of the current Edition are responsible for the specific Journal´s number, the final approvals for publication following conditionally the double-blind process, as well as the right to make minor adjustments on the final text, tables and figures, in order to meet the criteria of the Journal editorial, which follows the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards).

The result of reviewers’ evaluation should follow four possible modes:
(1) Approval without adjustments (or minimal adjustments);
(2) Approval subject to suggested changes;
(3) Suggestion of re-submission (in view of a new evaluation);
(4) Rejected.

The Editorial Team, the Organizers of the current Edition and reviewers reserve the right to propose changes in the original texts in order to maintain the quality of the publication, but respecting the author’s style and opinion.

The act of submitting a paper for REDES Journal implies that the author accepts the standards described in this document, as well as the authorization of publication.

Upon receiving the opinions, the authors have 15 days to send the updated version of the article. After the deadline without return of the authors, the submitted article will be filed.

Conflict of interest

The Public reliability over the peer review process and the credibility of published papers depend partly on how conflicts of interest are managed during writing, peer review and decision making by the editors.

Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers or editors have interests, which can be apparent or not, that may influence the development or evaluation of manuscripts. The conflict of interest can be of a personal, commercial, politic, academic, or financial nature.
When authors submit a manuscript, they are responsible for recognizing and declaring financial conflicts or from any other nature that may have influenced their research. The authors should manifest in the manuscript all financial support and other financial or personal connections regarding to the research.
The reviewer must report to the editors any conflicts of interest that could influence on opinion about the manuscript, and, if it is the case, should declare himself/herself unqualified to review it.
If the authors are not sure of what might constitute a potential conflict of interest, they should contact the Journal’s editorial office.

Copyright and Copyright Transfer Statement

The author must state that the paper is original (has not been published previously), not infringing any copyright or other ownership right involving third parties.
Once the paper is submitted, the Journal reserves the right to make normative changes, such as spelling and grammar, in order to maintain the language standard, but respecting the author’s style.
The published papers become ownership of REDES, considering that all the opinions expressed by the authors are their responsibility.

Guidelines for ethical conduct

AUTHORSHIP

Mentioning the authors in scientific papers ensures that credit is given to the appropriate researchers, those responsible for the study. The intentional absence of representing the relationship of a scientist with his work is considered a failure on ethical conduct, which undermines the reliability of the study.

It is not allowed to mention names of authors who have not contributed to the paper, including guest authors with the purpose of increasing chances of publication;
It is not allowed to submit papers for publication without the author’s permission; Participant authors, whether in writing, data collection or having any other contribution to the research, should be mentioned in the specific section in order to avoid "ghost authorships".

PLAGIARISM

One of the most common types of ethical conduct failure is plagiarism – when an author intentionally uses other scientists’ studies without permission, credit or knowing. There are different types of plagiarism, from literal copy to the paraphrase of another author’s writing.
Literal copy of excerpts is only permitted if the reference source is cited in the text with quotation marks, attending the standards for publication;
It is not allowed substantial copy from research materials, processes, tables, and equipment;
If the paper contains the essence of another paper, it should be properly referenced;
Paraphrasing is only allowed if the reference source is cited and it does not change the meaning intended by the original author;
Text recycling is not allowed.
The articles submitted to Redes go through the verification of possible plagiarism through Plagius - Plagiarism Detector software.

FRAUD IN RESEARCH

Fraud in research means to publish data or conclusions that were not generated by experiments or observations, but by invention or data manipulation.
Authors may be required to send raw data related to the research for editorial review. Consequently, all data must be stored for a while after publication;
Images can only be manipulated in order to improve clarity;
None specific feature of image should be improved, darkened, moved, removed or introduced;
Adjustments to brightness, contrast or color are acceptable provided they do not cloud or eliminate any original information.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Whenever researchers, authors, reviewers or editors have personal/financial interest or belief that may affect their objectivity or influence their actions inappropriately, there is a conflict of interest. Such relationships are also known as dual commitments, competing interests, or competing loyalties.
When submitting a paper, one should explicitly declare whether there are potential conflicts of interest or not, either with research participants, either with agencies that provided resources for the research;
This information must be indicated in the manuscript on a notification page. In case there are extensive details about the possibility of conflict, a document in form of a letter should be sent as a supplementary document, through the SEER system (Electronic Journal Publishing System).

SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS, MULTIPLE AND/OR DUPLICATE PUBLICATIONS

Authors must make sure their papers are based on original research and have never been published before. Submitting or re-submitting papers for intentional duplicate publication is considered ethical misconduct in publishing.
Avoid submitting the same paper for more than one journal at a time;
Even if the paper is under review process, one should wait for the reply before submitting it to other journals;
Avoid submitting papers, which have already been published in a journal, to be considered by another journal;
Avoid submitting papers that describe different but essentially the same research to different journals;
Inform about any previous paper submission (including presentations, summaries and outcomes or records postings) so that a duplicate submission may be considered;
In case you want to publish the paper in a journal from another country or in another language, contact the editorial team;
Declare any details concerning to the publication in other languages or countries.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the Rede Cariniana system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and allows them to create permanent archives of the journal for the preservation and restoration. Read more...

DOI - Digital Object Identifier

DOI - Digital Object Identifier is a standard for identifying documents in digital networks. Composed of numbers and letters, it is assigned to a digital object so that it is uniquely and persistently identified in the Web environment.

ORCID - Open Researcher and Contributor ID

Due to the importance of identifying the authors with greater accuracy, the journal Redes asks for the authors to include the ORCID in his/her metadata at the moment they submit the manuscripts.

This identifier individualizes the researcher, distinguishing one from the other whilst it avoids problems, such as ambiguities on the entries and spellings of the same name. Another important characteristic is that ORCID is unrestricted and allows the exchange of metadata.

By using ORCID ID, the researchers are connected with their activities, research results, publications and affiliations.
